Oil Separators are also knows as Petrol Interceptors or Hydrocarbon Separators.
There are three main type of oil separator in relation to drainage system, the By-pass Separator, the Full Retention Oil Separator and the Wash-bay Separator. Both the By-pass Separator and the Full Retention Oil Separator come in class 1 and class 2. The class 1 separators have a higher quality of filtration then the class 2 separators. You should seek the advice of your local authority on which type of oil separator to use. In order to comply with European Standard EN858 the oil separator should be fitted with a hydrocarbon alarm.
The By-pass Separator is generally use for car-parking areas and roads. The size of the separator is calculated by the catchment area. To calculate the NBS, Nominal Bypass Size, you multiply the total square metres of the catchment area by 0.0018 (eg. 2,000m² x 0.0018 = NSB3.6).

The Euroceptor is a by-pass separator available class 1 or class 2 with or without silt storage. The range start with the NSB1.5 which covers a drainage area of 833 square meters to the NSB120 which covers a drainage area of 66,640 square meters. Larger Separators can be made to order but on a large site it is recommend to have a number of small separators close to the sores them one large separator at the end of the site. More information is coming shortly.

The Full Retention Oil Separator is use where there is a high risk of a spillage. The Full Retention Oil Separator is size by firstly the volume of potential spillage and secondly the catchment area (multiplied by 0.018). We would recommend if possible minimizing the size of the high risk catchment area.
The Wash-bay Separator is mainly use for car and truck wash areas. The Wash-bay Separator should only be discharged in to foul sewers, if there is no foul sewer the water should be treated so that it is able to be reuse for washing the cars or trucks.
